Tips for DefenseThis is a featured page

Defense amounts to about 5% to 10% of the game, which correlates to real baseball. Interesting defense facts... RA affects a player's ability to get to the ball; GL affects a player's ability not to bobble it; AR affects his ability to make a strong accurate throw and get him out. You easily see the effects of GL on fielding percentage. AR is tough to analyze, but it affects double plays, throws from the outfield, etc. RA can somewhat be seen in a player's range factor, but something good to know... compare a low range (say 25) and a superstar (say 100)... the superstar WILL get to more balls hit to him than the bad defensive guy. At the shortstop position, this can save 1-2 HITS per game (presuming other factors are average - normal ratio of righties to lefties, ground ball to fly ball ratios, etc.)

When looking for top notch fielders at all positions, remember the following,
  • Consider the skills of the player and the demands of the position.
  • SS/2B get the most out of range, followed by CF.
  • 1B gets the most out of GL, followed by everyone else.
  • AR is more useful for OF and 3B/SS (better chance to get double plays) and, of course, C.
